Direct Plan vs Regular: Still Worth Switching?

Expense ratio gap between direct and regular mutual funds remains — when switching makes sense, tax triggers, and how to execute.

The cost gap didn’t disappear

Regular plans embed distributor commission in expense ratio — often 0.5–1% higher annually than direct. Over 15 years on ₹10 lakh, that drag compounds to lakhs. Direct platforms and MF websites make switching easier than a decade ago.

When switching wins

Long holding periods in equity funds with high regular TER spread — clear win over 7+ years if you won’t need advice hand-holding. Debt funds with smaller spread — less urgent.

Tax and exit load traps

Switching regular to direct within same AMC often means redeem + purchase — potential STCG/LTCG and exit load if within lock period. ELSS lock-in blocks switches. Model tax with LTCG calculator before bulk switch.

How to switch

Option A: redeem regular, buy direct (tax event). Option B: stop new SIP in regular, start direct SIP, hold legacy until goal exit. Option B avoids immediate CG on large embedded gains.

Worth it if: spread >0.75%, horizon >7 years, comfortable self-serving via AMC/direct platform.
